Review Resume and Application
Whether you’re applying for a competitive position or not, make sure that you double-check your application before submitting it. Nothing derails a good applicant more than making an error. Even small spelling and grammar errors can be a problem. Pay extra attention to your cover letter and resume, if these are required. You’ll also want to ensure that the cover letter is specific for that position. Sending out a tailored cover letter shows that you’re interested in the job and have read through the description. This will set you apart from other applicants and put you in a better position to get the job.
Be Flexible on Pay and Benefits
Some jobs may not have much-negotiating room when it comes to the pay and benefits. However, if you want a job but the pay is slightly lower than desirable, ask the hiring manager to work with you. You don’t want to come across as having ridiculous requests. However, there may be ways that you can negotiate a better package for yourself. Before starting this conversation, emphasize that this is a position that you would like to have but that the package is slightly suboptimal for your needs and experience. Maybe they can’t raise your salary but may be able to ask for more vacation days or other perks.
Focus on Your Network and Build Connections
Ultimately a job will be right for you when you have the right skills and experience. However, it may be easier for you to find a new position if you know people in the field. Some job openings are not advertised online so reach out to any contacts in your network. They may be able to tell you about opportunities in your field. Depending on where you live, consider joining a professional network in your area. Reach out and get to know people around you. These connections can often pay off in a large way.
Be Persistent
Finally, keep in mind that you might not end up with your ideal job but just having a job can be a benefit. Look for positions that are in your field or related to your field. If you have a job that’s not perfect, work on building your skillset, and then you can apply for more jobs down the road. Keep an open mind through the process and don’t be discouraged if it takes some time to find a job. Most people find that persistence is the key to landing a good position.
